Mulch Tips

  • Apply mulch 2-4 inches deep around trees, shrubs, and garden beds to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Keep mulch 2-3 inches away from tree trunks and plant stems to prevent rot and pest issues.
  • Hardwood mulch lasts longer than softwood but decomposes slower, adding fewer nutrients to the soil.
  • Colored mulch (red, black, brown) is dyed and may cost more but retains its appearance longer.
  • Refresh mulch annually. Over time it breaks down and loses depth, requiring a 1-2 inch top-up.
  • One cubic yard of mulch covers about 108 square feet at 3 inches deep or 162 square feet at 2 inches deep.
